What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy is a gentle and relaxing non-invasive bodywork technique developed by Tom Bowen (1916-1982) from Geelong, Victoria. It comprises of a specific series of rolling-type moves over soft-tissue, muscle, fascia and connective tissue.

Bowen Therapy affects these tissues of the body in a variety of ways simultaneously. It relaxes tight muscles, increases hydration in the tissues, increases tonus in the core muscles and contractile strength within the fascia. Bowen Therapy balances the nervous system getting a client into a more parasympathetic state which is crucial for healing to take place.

Many health funds pay a benefit towards a Bowen Treatment.

What to expect during a Bowen Treatment?

A practitioner will spend time to assess the client and will address the body as a whole or target specific problems by applying gentle moves. Throughout the session there are frequent but very essential pauses that allows the body time to respond and allows the muscles to relax.

There is no manipulation and no force is used. Treatments generally last for 45 – 60 minutes.

Clients often experience a deep sense of relaxation.

Sessions can be tailored to individual needs. Clients who cannot lie flat on a massage table can have treatments in the comfort of a chair.

Results are remarkable and often only a few sessions are required.
